“We are bought at heavenly prices, endorse brands, walk on ramps, are always under security and have media attention. We party with icons and move in a high class circle. People worship us and we give them autographs. People buy what we say, people wish to eat what we eat and we have a huge fan following & respect.”
We are “Men in Blue” but sometimes the media ironically calls us – “Men in Black”. We were tired playing the in-house commercial matches where we were auctioned like some antique monuments. Coming to the recent world cup - We won the matches dramatically to reach the Super Eight. It’s a different matter that one of the teams we played against was virgin but we owe the credit of winning against the other strong team. In the Super Eight we couldn’t manage.
We were all set for the world tournament which started just five days after the in-house cricket IPL ended. It’s not our fault if we dropped certain catches. Although, the hangover of IPL parties was over, still we could see stars twinkling beside the sun, while taking a catch. The cheer leaders weren’t sexy enough to motivate us when we had hit a boundary. Moreover, it’s difficult to win without playing four external (foreign) players in the squad. We are used to it now.
Now that we are out of the tournament, we will take the whole responsibility of the loss. No one should blame IPL. These fans are going to forget it in a matter of a fortnight. What is important now is – “Where is my next shoot?”, “Which is the next high profile party I am invited to?” and “Where shall I plan my holidays?”
This is what all have to say about us!
It’s easy for others to point out our loss sitting on a couch in an air conditioned room. Come to the fields and face fast bowlers, high catches in the sticking sun, dehydrated body and much more. We endorse brands to make money because we have proved our worth on fields. We go partying to drop the day’s strain. We work hard to see our fans happy. When we win a tournament, we cover the entire media with applauds, but when we lose it, we are fucked. No one remembers the matches we won in those moments. That’s makes us feel sad and bad – Whether we win or lose, we lose.
IPL was conducted by BCCI, not by us. We are players and given a chance, would always play. Let BCCI and selectors plan the upcoming tournaments accordingly. We are born to play and we will play on every opportunity given to us.
